Welcome to GEMINI...the shareware alternative desktop from Germany
(via ST Report/CPU NewsWire and Ralph Mariano). This text file has
been prepared to help get you up and running. The complete docs for
this program are on this disk, but they are unfortunately written in
German. Since all drop down menus, etc. are in English, the program
isn't all that hard to figure out.
Although this README file isn't going to go into any great detail
about how to operate GEMINI. We suggest that, at least initially, you
run GEMINI from floppy disk, since the program has been configured to
boot from floppy. Create a folder with the name AUTO on this floppy
and copy the files AMCGDOS.PRG and SHELL0.PRG into that folder.
(We'll refer to this disk as the GEMINI boot disk.)
GEMINI uses GDOS, but the program can run without GDOS installed.
AMCGDOS is a public domain version of GDOS from Germany.
Leave the GEMINI boot disk un-write protected, as the Clipboard and
recoverable Trashcan both need to write to the disk...in fact, at the
first bootup, GEMINI is going to attempt to create a CLIPBOARD and
TRASHCAN folder on the boot disk. Because GEMINI writes to this disk,
we highly recommend you make a backup copy...just in case!
Once GEMINI is up and running, you'll notice drive icons along the
left side of your screen for Drives A, B, C and D. If you don't have,
for instance, a hard drive, you can drag the C and D icons to the
Shredder icon if you wish. You can easily set up your own icons, and
GEMINI gives you a number of different icons to choose from.
Next, take a look at the open directory window for Drive A...there
are a number of "different looking" icons than what you may be used to
on your ST. If you've seen NeoDesk from Gribnif, GEMINI probably won't
seem so alien to you. Try an experiment...single click on one of these
icons and, while holding the mouse button down, drag the selected icon
to the desktop and let it go. Yep, just like NeoDesk, you can copy
program and other file icons directly onto the desktop. To get rid of
them, if you wish, just drag them to the Shredder.
One final thing...see the "Console" window at the bottom of the
screen? Well, that's GEMINI's built in Command Line Interpreter. You
can customize the size of this window via the Console Window selection
in the "Options" drop down menu. You can change the height and width
of this window and even the size of the text displayed in it (assuming
GDOS is active). Ok, but what's it good for? Click on ENTER MUPFEL in
the "Options" drop down window. Now, you've just gotten into the CLI.
Type "help" (without quotes) and hit a Return for a list of available
commands. Any time you want to get back to GEMINI (and use of the
mouse!), type "venus" or "exit."
Hopefully, you can figure out most of the rest by just playing with
the various options. If anyone does take the time to actually
translate the docs, please let us know! If we get a translated version
of the docs, we'll be uploading them to the services for the benefit
of all.
